Norwegian Cruise Online Check-In: What to Have Ready and What Happens Next
On September 16, we completed online check-in for our October 7 Norwegian Joy sailing: a 16-night voyage from Los Angeles to Miami with a full Panama Canal transit. Check-in opened exactly 21 days before embarkation. It was a good reminder that the trip begins well before we reach the terminal.
Online check-in brings together the details the cruise line needs before boarding. If this is your first Norwegian sailing, or it has been a while since your last one, here is what to prepare, what to review, and what happens after you finish.
When does Norwegian online check-in open?
Norwegian says online check-in becomes available 21 days before sailing and closes three days before embarkation. For our October 7 departure, September 16 was opening day. I would not leave this task until the closing window: a missing document or a question about a traveler’s details is much easier to handle while there is still time.
What should you have ready?
Gather the identification and travel documents required for your particular itinerary, along with the reservation details for every guest. Have your travel information and intended onboard payment method ready, too. Norwegian says its check-in asks for personal and identification information, travel details, and payment preferences.
Read each name, document number, and expiration date carefully before submitting. Requirements can differ by citizenship and itinerary, so verify the current instructions for every country on your route rather than assuming a previous cruise had the same rules.
Work through every guest, then choose the pier arrival time
You can complete check-in through My NCL or the Norwegian Cruise Line app. Open the correct reservation and follow the prompts for each person traveling. Finishing one traveler’s steps does not mean the entire reservation is complete.
The process also lets you reserve an arrival check-in time at the pier. Treat that as a terminal arrival appointment, then plan your ground transportation around the time shown in your final cruise documents. A flight arrival, hotel checkout, luggage drop, and terminal check-in are separate pieces of the day; give each one its own room in the plan.
If check-in does not appear at midnight
We were ready when our 21-day check-in window opened at midnight on September 16. The check-in option was not readily available on our mobile devices, but we were able to access it on our iPad. We also could not select a pier arrival time that night; that option became available to us the next day. Availability may differ by sailing and device.
If you do not see check-in right away, first confirm that you are viewing the correct reservation and that the 21-day window has opened for your sailing. Refresh the app or sign in again; if one device still does not offer the option, try My NCL in a browser or another device. If the arrival-time choice is missing after the rest of your check-in is available, return later and check again rather than assuming you have made a selection. Confirm the chosen time in your eDocs once they are issued.
What happens after you check in?
Once online check-in is complete for all guests on the reservation, Norwegian provides access to eDocs, which serve as the boarding pass. Download them as soon as they are available and review the ship, sailing date, guest information, and assigned arrival time. Norwegian currently advises bringing a printed copy to the pier and says eDocs become unavailable to download 72 hours before sailing.

This is also a good moment to confirm that the Norwegian Cruise Line app is installed and that your reservation appears there. The app can show your itinerary, reservations, purchases, and other planning details before the cruise. Online check-in and booking onboard experiences are different tasks, so review the dining and excursions you intended to reserve separately.
The checks I would make before closing the app
Make sure every guest shows as checked in. Save and review the eDocs while they are available. Confirm your selected arrival time, recheck the required travel documents, and make a note of anything that still needs attention. Keep private passport, payment, and reservation details out of any screenshots you plan to share.
Our September 16 check-in was one milestone in the lead-up to the Norwegian Joy. Next comes the practical embarkation-day plan: eDocs and luggage tags, what stays in our carry-on, and how we move from our pre-cruise stay to the terminal.
