Should You Bid for a Cruise Stateroom Upgrade? What to Check Before You Offer
The invitation to bid on a better stateroom can be tempting. Before moving the slider, I want to know what the offer will cost, what it will actually provide, and which details I would leave to chance.
We are preparing for a 16-night Norwegian Joy voyage from Los Angeles to Miami, including a full Panama Canal transit. Our current stateroom is a Deck 10 Balcony in category BB, and we submitted a bid for a Club Balcony Suite. Norwegian has since sent us a real-time outbid notice: other guests have offered more for that upgrade type. Our offer remains submitted, and we have not received a final upgrade decision.
How a stateroom bid works
Norwegian’s Upgrade Advantage is offered by invitation to eligible guests with an existing reservation. A bid is an offer for a higher category, not a confirmed upgrade. Norwegian may accept it as late as sailing day. If the bid is declined, the original stateroom remains and there is no upgrade charge.
The amount is per person for the entire voyage, not per night. On a reservation with at least two guests, the first two are charged. Once accepted, the card is charged immediately and the upgrade payment is final and nonrefundable. An unaccepted bid can be changed or canceled through the offer link before Norwegian’s deadline, but acceptance may happen first.
Calculate the entire cabin cost
Our offer is $250 per person for a Club Balcony Suite. For two of us, that is $500 added to the fare already paid. Across 16 nights, that works out to $31.25 per cabin night. The nightly comparison is useful; the $500 total is the amount we must be willing to spend.

Compare that total with the current price of purchasing an upgrade directly. A direct purchase may offer a choice of specific available cabins, while a bid leaves the assignment to Norwegian. Availability and pricing can change, so check again before committing.
Look beyond the category name
Norwegian Joy has several Club Balcony Suite configurations and locations. The category does not guarantee the largest balcony or a favorite deck. Study the ship’s stateroom descriptions and deck plans, then ask whether the range of possible cabins genuinely improves on your existing room.
Norwegian cannot guarantee a particular cabin number, location, or specific features within the upgraded category. If your current location is central to the trip—or you need a particular accessible arrangement—do not assume a bid will preserve it.
Check the benefits and the terms
Norwegian says an accepted bid does not add new booking promotions, although the promotions on the original reservation remain. Club Balcony Suite is also distinct from The Haven; compare actual category amenities rather than relying on the word “suite.”
If Norwegian’s travel protection is attached to the reservation, an accepted bid may trigger an additional charge to cover the higher trip cost. Check the offer’s disclosed total and any applicable taxes before submitting.
What an outbid notice changes
For a 16-night voyage, more room appeals to us, and our original $500 total was within what we would spend for that opportunity. The outbid message invites us to update the offer, but it does not state the winning amount or promise that a higher bid will be accepted. We can keep the current offer while we decide whether any increase is worth it.
A $50 increase per guest would add $100 to our two-person total. That is the calculation I would make before reacting to an alert, then compare the new total with any direct upgrade price and the value of the Balcony we already chose. My decision test remains: Would I gladly take this category at that full price even if Norwegian chooses the cabin location?
Before you submit an offer
Add up the charge for every paying guest. Compare it with the direct-upgrade price. Review the possible staterooms and deck locations. Confirm the amenities and existing promotions. Use a card you are prepared to have charged immediately. Finally, make sure the room you already booked still works if the bid is declined.
Our outbid notice is a point in the process, not the outcome. We will update this story when Norwegian makes a final decision and share what happened from the submitted offer through any cabin assignment. Until then, the best bid is one that fits both your budget and your comfort with uncertainty.
Before making your own offer, review Norwegian Cruise Line’s Upgrade Advantage terms, Upgrade Advantage FAQ, and Norwegian Joy stateroom descriptions for the current rules and cabin details.
